Getting Help
Need help or know someone who does? Laid off from work? Had a fire? Been flooded out? We all need someone to lean on from time to time. That is why we are here. We have clothing for you and your family: layettes for the baby, school clothes and shoes for the kids, good dress clothes for a job interview, steel toe shoes and boots for the job.
We are a program delivery partner of the Greater Battle Creek United Way's Clothing for Families in Need program. Give us a call at 269-964-7234 or stop in.
The Charitable Union requires a referral for individuals and their household to shop at Charitable Union client store. Click here to download a copy of the referral form. After you complete the form, fax it to the Charitable Union at 269-966-2535.
- A Medicaid or Food Stamp card may serve as a referral
- 211 Call Center referral will track information for community
- Health and human service agencies, schools, churches and businesses can make referrals
- Fire victims - In addition to the clothing in the client store, children would receive new underwear, socks and school outfit, bedding, towels, washcloths, dishes, silver, pots/pans, personal hygiene products. We recommend clients go to Red Cross first for referral.
- New Residence - referral must come from caseworker or agency working directly with client
- Steel toed shoes - referrals normally come from business or back to work agency
- Work or interview clothing – referral can come from any community agency
- Layettes - birth record from hospital or caseworker
- Funeral clothing – referral can come from any community agency
- Shoes – referral from Battle Creek Public Schools
Clients are given a Charitable Union shopping card – clients can shop once each month.
- Cards are color coded based on last name of head of household’s last name.

*The client store is closed the last Friday of each month for inventory
In addition to the items available in the client store clients receive:
- Annually a set of sheets and a blanket, bedspread or comforter (these are normally given out during the birthday month of the head of household)
- In August and April school clothing – this includes a new or gently used pair of pants and shirt, or dress, and one new pair of underwear and two new pair of socks.
- In October we begin handing out winter coats, hats, mittens/gloves and boots and continue through March
- We try to give out new blankets during the month of December or January depending on funding resources.
