it costs money to give away needed items.....
There is a song that the Kingston Trio made popular many years ago called, "Desert Pete". It's a story about someone dying of thirst as he crosses the desert until he comes upon an old water pump. Next to the tap is a jar with a small amount of water in it and a note attached that says...
"You've got to prime the pump. You must have faith and believe. You've got to give of yourself 'fore you're worthy to receive. Now there's just enough to prime with, so don't you go drinkin' first. Just pour it in and pump like mad and, buddy, you'll quench your thirst. Drink all the water you can hold. Wash your face, cool your feet. Then leave the bottle full for others. Thank you kindly, Desert Pete."
For Charitable Union to continue to serve others as it has since 1887, it needs to ask you to help 'prime the pump' with your financial support.
Did you know, for example, that it costs Charitable Union about one dollar to process and distribute each donated item it receives? Since we get about a half million items a year, you can quickly see why it is so important for Charitable Union to seek financial donations.
The reasons that donors make charitable bequests are as varied as the donors themselves. Perhaps the one common denominator, however, is a desire to give back to the community. One donor put it this way, “The values you espouse are values I want to see perpetuated in our society. I like your objectives, and I applaud the fact that you do not waste money in achieving them. I want to continue to support your mission.”
Whether your talent is in sewing, quilting, working with people or something else there are many ways to be a part of Charitable Union. Some examples of the various opportunities to care are:
- Greeting donors and receiving their donations
- Sorting and measuring clothing
- Straightening shelves and stock client store throughout the day
- Working at receptionist desk
- Working in the gift shop
- Maintaining the facilities
- Helping with clerical tasks
