  • Winter Coats for Kids Still Needed

While our Winter Coats for kids drives are all done (with more than 2,779 coats distributed just to kids since our distribution began in October) winter is not. Please take a new or used coat to any of these area businesses to help ensure that no child goes cold this winter. Take a look in your closets and bring in those old and unused coats so that others might be able to use them this winter. Drop them off at Charitable Union.

    Thanks for your support!

  • Giving Thanks

This is my first Thanksgiving as Executive Director of Charitable Union. The months have flown by and I am learning much about the organization and all the different “angles” that are reflected in the wonderful works we do for our community. Each “angle” helps to make the gem of Charitable Union shine as brightly as the lights that will soon adorn our Christmas trees.

At this time of year we are all reminded to give thanks. This year I have much to be thankful for both personally and professionally. Professionally, I have a new admiration of this organization that has given 128 years of service to the people of Battle Creek. How has that happened?

Well, we all know that it “takes a village” to raise a child. And, so too, it takes an “army” of dedicated donors, volunteers, staff and friends to make this organization stand tall among the other nonprofits in our area. How?

To date this year, we have distributed over 350,000 items to those in need. We have served more than 15,400 individuals. How have we done this? So far this year we have received over 53,000 bags and boxes of donations from over 7,500 generous donors. Our faithful volunteers have given us over 22,000 hours and have sorted, hung and bagged those 350,000. But we are more than just numbers. It is the dedication of those who help make this happen that strengthens my appreciation of this organization.

We have had generous donations of not only clothing and household items, but we have had 100’s of donors’ share from their pockets to keep the doors of Charitable Union open to all in need. And we had many, many customers come into The Gift Shop @ Charitable Union and purchase the beautiful creations made by the loving hands of our dedicated Gift Shop volunteers. But we are more than even those donations.

Yes, it takes an “army” to serve those in need and without all of those donors, volunteers, staff and friends coming together, surely we would fail. So, I am grateful to be the one walking side by side with those who have given so much to so many. There is no one area that is more important than the next; we all have our part to do to bring this gem called Charitable Union to life. Saying thank you is certainly not enough, but from my heart I am so grateful to each of those men and women who are part of the gem that I am growing to appreciate more each day and how grateful I am to be able to say with the Board and Staff with whom I work, “we are help that brings hope” to so many of our neighbors.

    Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!
    Teresa Allen
    Executive Director

  • Yes, Virginia there is a Springtime!

"Virginia your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see....Yes, Virginia, there is a..." Springtime. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist.....alas! how dreary would the world be is there was no Springtime. It would be as dreary as if there were no Charitable Union. There would be no clothes to give away, no smiles on kids faces.....

Not believe in Springtime! You might was well not believe in donating! "You may tear apart the baby rattle and see what makes the noise inside....Is it real? Ah, Virginia, in all the world there is nothing else real and abiding...."

No Springtime! Thank God! it lives and will live forever. A thousand years from now (when this snow melts) we will see Springtime and it will continue to make glad the hearts of all....

Thanks for all your donations and Yes, Springtime is coming!

  • Whom we serve

We are getting a lot of requests for people around the country for help. While we would like to help everyone, our resources are limited and we are geared to serve our local area. That means our mission is to serve those in need in the greater Battle Creek, Michigan area.

There are lots of organizations available to help those in need, please check out agencies in your local area; Goodwill, Salvation Army and if you have 211 help service call them and let them know what you need, they will be able to provide you with agencies in your local area that can help.

  • Fund Development Director

Another great story...Lynette's daughter is going to Disney with the LHS choir. She and her daughter have been saving for a year so that they could afford the trip. Yesterday, Lynette realized that her daughter had outgrown every pair of her shorts. She was not sure what to do, since most stores don't have summer clothing in stock at this time. Her husband asked if she had been into Charitable Union. So, Lynette came in today and was able to get summer clothing for her daughter.

It meant so much that she wanted to share her story and give a thank you to our staff. Thanks for sharing your story Lynette! Thank you, donors, for your contribution. Look out Mickey Mouse, here she comes!
